I went fishing for the first time in my life a couple days ago.

Open ocean fishing is my dream activity to photograph but the fishing itself never occurred to me as an activity to DO.

But then, Saturday night, I was just sitting around minding my own business getting ready for bed when one of the deckhands said, “Hey, it’s going to be a great day tomorrow, do you want to go out?”

To his credit, it was a great day.

We don’t get a lot of women going out on the boats and probably even less photographers so I want to say a special thank you to the guys who let me tag along, get in the way, learn to hold a fishing rod, and generally shoot too many photos.

Once I got the mechanics down I actually caught a few fish. It was pretty exciting.

Well, I say pretty exciting but what I actually mean is it was a fun for a day but I’m not sure why one would ever do it as a hobby (sorry guys).

But I’m glad they all seemed to enjoy themselves and were pretty pleased with what we caught. Mostly I just like watching the whales.

But I have to say that if I get bored standing around waiting for a fish to get hungry down at the bottom of the ocean, I don’t ever get bored of photographing other people doing it.

At the end of the day I caught three black cod, one halibut, one silver, and one skate. I think… I don’t know, all I know is that they tasted amazing when we fried them up the next night.

I’m still using Instagram as a mini-blog platform, follow me at @leeslens to see daily photos which don’t make it on my website.
